If your student is just beginning to play the violin, you may want to rent or buy a less expensive, but good instrument. If he/she decides to continue with violin, you will want to buy a student violin that is a good quality instrument. There are a lot of avenues to take in buying student violin at a discount price. If your student is still interested and practices on his/her own outside of school by the time they reach middle school, they will probably stick with it through high school. Violin is a great instrument to play and offers a lot of opportunity to succeed such as school concerts, youth symphony orchestras, college orchestras, and beyond.

The best way is through the instructor. We bought my daughters first owned violin from a student who was not longer interested. The violin was a great 4/4 well made violin for 100. In her junior year of high school, we bought a higher end violin that will carry her through college according to her violin instructor. We did pay 600 for this violin, but we found it at a discount price. It was originally priced at 1200. So, if you are willing to ask and look around you can find great instruments at reasonable prices. As a mom of four children, we have no choice but to research and check around for great deals.

The best way to determine what size professional violin cost your student needs is to consult his/her instructor. They are trained musicians. If you decide to determine the size on your own, you can measure his/her outstretched arm from the neck to the middle of the palm. Using this size, you can use the following information to choose a violin: length=23 – violin (full-size); length=22 – violin length=20 – violin length=18 1/2 – violin length=16 1/2 – violin Most schools start violin in fifth grade with some starting at an earlier age. At this age, your student will more than likely need a 3/4 or 4/4 violin. We started my daughter with a 3/4 violin and moved to a 4/4 violin in the eighth grade.
